Why Doula Certification Matters

Doulas working with the most well known doula certifying agencies, start off their career in basically the same way. They attend a one to two day in person training. From there they are ready to work as a doula. They have a clear understanding of how to offer great doula support and care. In order to certify, however, there are quite a few more steps. Most organizations require additional reading and research. They require a strong knowledge of local resources as well as local hospital policies and procedures. Additionally, certifying doulas are required to attend a certain amount of births, and obtain an evaluation from not only their clients, but also the Primary Care Providers and/or nurses attending these births. Typically this is a one hundred plus hour commitment. This shows great dedication to the occupation as this part of certification is self driven and directed.

Certified Doulas have often also passed an exam. This exam is a challenging test of knowledge and often includes multiple essays as well as typical short answer questions. Doulas passing exams are proven via a third party to be knowledgeable in their field.

Certified doulas must re-certify every two to three years. That’s right! These doulas are responsible for staying current on evidence based information and to prove they are doing so. They are often required to show a certain amount of continuing education hours over the two to three years. They also need to submit several new evaluations from clients within that two to three years as well. Their current up to date knowledge is again verified by a third party.

Why does this matter to clients? Because practices change. There is constant new research and evidence in the birth industry. You want your doula to be current with this information. A doula who is up to date, can answer questions you have, or direct you to current resources to answer those questions. A certified doula is your best choice for doula care.
